The article Creative Days: A Daily Diary Study of Emotion, Personality, and Everyday Creativity explores the emotion-personality link with creativity. The authors, Tamlin S. Conner and Paul J. Silva question how emotions and personality are expressed in daily creative effort and who tends to experience creativity the most. They theorize that young adults experiencing high levels of positivity yield higher levels of creativity; therefore, mood has a direct impact on the spark of creative process. Given examples of creativity were language arts, music, fresh ideas, and artwork. Conner and Silva conducted a methodical study of 658 young adults by providing them with access to an online diary and asked them to rate their creative attempts over a two week timeframe regarding “…their experience of 18 positive and negative emotion states each day…” They were to rate themselves using a 60-item NEO Five-Factor Inventory to evaluate personality

Despite the strength of “…systematic assessment of positive and negative affect across a range of activation levels…” , “…large sample size…”, and “…inclusion of personality variables to test for patterns of moderation…” the researchers noted the self-report could be a potential weakness in the findings, presumably due to varied ideas regarding creativity.
Ultimately, I don’t know that I would have done anything differently. I believe that the study was well-controlled and served its purpose. Sure, the study could be more regimented by taking place in a lab, but I think that would actually hamper the creative process and generate artificial results. Anyway, Conner and Silva were pleasantly surprised as to how this study supported lab studies. Creativity may produce outwardly observed results but the internal assessment to link emotions and creativity is best described by the individual experiencing
