1. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes: In many ways, the song Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes can be representative of one of Mao’s greatest accomplishments: the Long March. The mood of the song is upbeat compared to the grueling Long March. However, the lyrics and title provide many similarities to the March. The first two lines of the song are, “I 'm gonna fight 'em off A seven nation army couldn 't hold me back. One could consider Mao to be the narrator, ‘em to be The Nationalist Party and the seven nation army also is the nationalist party. Note, that at the beginning of the March the Nationalist Party forces were over 4 times the size of Mao’s communist forces. In the end, Mao comes on top. 2. Uprising - Muse Muse’s song Uprising is about an Orwellian like government, which is quite similar to Chairman Mao’s communist government. In the third and fourth line the song says, “they 'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down And hope that we will never see the truth around.” Of course, Bellamy is not referring to actual drugs. Instead, he is saying that the government shoves propaganda down everyone 's throats, dumbs everyone down, and mask the real issues. Mao did exactly that in numerous ways such as posters, books, and shrines. By making a multitude of propaganda, Mao succeeded in glorifying himself, China, and by hiding all the problems such as widespread famine. One of the the Mao’s most famous pieces of propaganda was called the Little Red Book, which contained over 200 quotes from Mao himself. Mao’s goal with the Little Red Book was to “make revolution.” Another idea expressed in Uprising is that the people should overthrow the government or dictator at any cost. Hence, the name Uprising.
