Cultures around the world have different ideas on how they were made. These creation myths have ben passed down through these societies and are a big part of whom they are. Creation Myths can provide a window into each individual culture and what they do or do not value. Even the gender of the deity can be a sign of either a patriarchal or matriarchal culture. For example, the Huron creation legend shows that they value the woman and her relationship with nature. On the other hand, Genesis 1-2 from the Bible shows that the Christian culture believes that a male deity created Earth; therefore patriarchal. Genesis 1-2 begins with nothing and a male God speaks the land, ocean, and heaven into existence. “Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear” (Genesis 164). In Christian culture, a man is of higher power than a woman. “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper suited to him’”(Genesis 167). During our childhood we read the Tortoise and the Hare, which is a story that taught us the moral, “slow and steady wins the race”. We also read things such as: The Boy Who Cried Wolf, which taught us essentially not to lie, because if you lie enough, you won’t be believed when you tell the truth. These stories taught us valuable lessons growing up, but not only do these children books teach us lessons. As we get older we start reading things known as creation myths in our classes.…

Creation myths seem to merely explain the formation of man and the universe’s existence. However, the myths explain views on women and children, provide people with a sense of faith, and use symbols to convey a second meaning. Both creation myths, “Yahweh” and Iroquois, form the foundation of culture, because of the similar views on the representation of the holy tree and contrasting views concerning the appearance of humans on Earth. The Iroquois and “Yahweh” are similar in the interpretation of the significance of the holy tree in their culture.…
