Creation Myth Motifs

Throughout the diverse cultures and religions in the world, there are many different creation myths. Each culture has their own creation myth and there are many similarities, or motifs, within these creation myths. The three creation myth motifs that I thought were the most important were humans being made perfectly in the first attempt, an angry god punishing humans or another god, and women being created after men. Several cultures’ creation myths describe humans as being made perfectly in the first attempt. The god or powerful being only needed one attempt to create what the god then viewed as “perfect”. This motif is a great example of how many cultures view themselves as perfect when humans are first born. These cultures see babies …show more content…
In the Chinese myth, Nuwa creates humans perfectly when she creates them by using her own hands. Later on, the humans are less perfect because Nuwa grows tired of creating the humans by hand and instead, she flings mud from a stick to create them. The humans which were created by hand are viewed as the smarter humans, while the humans flung from a stick are thought of as less intelligent. The second most important motif is an angry god that punishes humans or another god. Humans in the past had no way of knowing what caused the changes in weather, so they believed the gods or other powerful beings controlled the weather and natural disasters. Humans believed how they acted would affect a god’s mood. If the humans angered the god, then the god would send floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, or other natural disasters to them. The humans also thought their own pain and suffering came from the gods in their creation myth because of something the humans or another god did to anger a very powerful …show more content…
There are many motifs that can be found inside the creation myths, but I think these motifs are very strong in representing how the different cultures feel about certain topics, such as women’s rights, human imperfections, and what causes natural disasters. Although the cultures’ opinions may have changed over time because of modern science, each culture still continues to believe in their same creation myth. This is similar to how many children believe the Lime Kiln is a “cloud factory” until they are old enough to understand what is really going on. Maybe you have your own childhood beliefs that changed once you began to understand modern

Whenever the locust was invited to a new community, after few days, one of their members would commit adultery which would result to them being send away. In addition to that, the number of times the creatures made mistakes; the Holy people always came to their aid. The theme of manifest destiny also links the human beings with divine powers as it is shown in the Iroquois Creation Story and the Navajo Creation story that there was a closer bond between human beings and the divine powers. In the Iroquois Creation Story, human beings were created by the good mind while the other creatures like apes were as a result of the bad mind. On the Navajo Creation Story, the human beings have been established as a consequence of the magic portrayed by the Holy people using their buckskins.…

Throughout our lives we are taught different stories that can affect us dramatically, either in a positive way or negative way. During our childhood we read the Tortoise and the Hare, which is a story that taught us the moral, “slow and steady wins the race”. We also read things such as: The Boy Who Cried Wolf, which taught us essentially not to lie, because if you lie enough, you won’t be believed when you tell the truth. These stories taught us valuable lessons growing up, but not only do these children books teach us lessons. As we get older we start reading things known as creation myths in our classes.…

Many might not acknowledge how much of an impact food has made in shaping the society in which we live. Another unknown detail is that the use of farming is very recent to our knowledge. Dating to about 11,000 years ago, farming has played a key role in the evolution of mankind. About 11,000 years ago humans started to cultivate food intentionally. This process of cultivating food is known as “farming” and it started taking hold in the Near Eastern part of the world at about 8,500 B.C. This is astonishing considering the first trace of man dates back to 150,000 years.…

With many religions and beliefs, comes a variety of creation stories. Through stories mankind has learned all kinds of lessons as well as where they came from, and these two creation stories are no exception. The similarities and differences between the Iroquois and Judeo-Christian creation stories are uncanny. Genesis 1-4 describes how God made the Earth in technically six days, since he took the seventh day off and made it holy; as well as several unfortunate events that took place involving Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel. The creation story perfectly demonstrates their belief in the concept of sin.…

You have an interesting theory, Joyce. It was hard for me to determine why most of these myths have the same message. Something that I have noticed from most of them is that their stories are somewhat similar, the creation myths mostly. At least, they all agree that the world was in darkness at the beginning and the sequence of events that happened as well. For most of these stories, the first thing that was created was the light (even in the Bible).…

Normally, as someone who is highly invested in the idea of science and creation, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to thinking about the different myths of creation. For me, creation all started when a group of molecules happened to join together and eventually evolved into the many organisms that are seen every day. It never occurred to me that there is such a difference between different creation myths. During the first couple of weeks in the semester it became clear that creation is rooted in many cultures in diverse ways.…

The myths that I choose to compare and contrast their major elements are the Ute Creation Myth and the Hawaiian Creation Myth. These two myths are similar but they possess some differences as well. In the creation in the Ute Myth there was a spirit in the sky named “Manitou” alone in the heavens with the clouds, sky, and sun. However, in the beginning of the Hawaiian Myth there was only darkness, from there the night was born as a male creature, meanwhile the female one was the essences of the darkness itself. But, both tales the way that things came into the world have a similar order, the creation stared with plants which surrounded the earth, the fishes, birds, and lastly animals.…

Looking at Creation Myths The creation myths of the Norse and Aztecs specifically contain large similarities. The brothers decided to kill the evil giant Ymir and from his body create the world.…

Religions have very distinct differences because every religion has something that another one does not. The differences can even cause conflicts between different religions, even if they are in the same family. Religions also have similarities that can cause feuds to end if people use it in the right way. These religions came from very different places and are influenced by very different things but they both contain the concept of nature worship. You can see these similarities and differences in Shinto and Native American religions if you look at their concept of gods and the rituals they have to worship said gods.…
