When I first formed my opinion about the idea of creating my own stress, I evaluated the stress in my life and how my own actions could have caused it in some way; I also tried to objectively look at the lives of the people around me to determine if perhaps they too had made choices that somehow could have caused some stress. As I pondered this, I was reminded of the research in chapter 9 by Chida, Stoptoe and Powell that showed that “people who attend religious services live longer than people who do not” and another study by Tartaro, Leuken, and Gun that “found that participants who scored high on a test of religiosity and spirituality showed lower levels of cortisol responses to lab-induces stress”; the research in this chapter by Ano and Vasconcelles also pointed to this end by showing that “positive religious coping leads positive adjustment to stress”. For me it really is true; as a follower of Christ, God has called me to cast my cares and worries on Him because He cares for me, He has told me not to worry about the future because He is in control, and also on a more practical level, the bible instructs me in how I should live my life and how I should treat others, and many of these teachings would prevent a lot of the stress we often create for ourselves.
