Creating Our Own Reality

Improved Essays
Reality is how one person perceives the world around them and what someone believes to be the absolute nature of all things. Deepak Chopra, an alternative medicine advocate and american writer once said, “Creating your own reality is the richest gift you received at birth.” It's often believed that we do not have control over reality and we as a society create a general consensus reality which is predominantly believed to be true. The idea that our thoughts create our world is a modern New Age idea which is the important foundation behind spirituality and self-discovery.

We are under the assumption that reality has been determined for us and we react to life on “auto-pilot.” When someone can begin to understand that our own thoughts is what creates our reality, then can they begin to consciously chose a different thought process, therefore creating a different reality. Alison Stormwolf, the writer of “Creating Your Own Reality & The Power of Thought” said, “Change your thoughts and you change your reality. You can continue to create unconsciously, or you can become a Conscious creator- the choice is always up to you!” Every individual has an ideal goal or dream they would someday like to achieve and eventually some people do accomplish their goal, but the difference between those who achieve their dream or goal and those who don’t is simply their mindset. Our Excuses, rationalizations, and justifications is ultimately our surrender to any possibility of success we wish to see for ourselves. It’s a choice, a choice to look past our obstacles, our critics, our villains, and our fears to see a better life and write a better reality for ourselves. The moment we decide to take control of our life and make those steps towards a better reality, is the moment we break away from the society built consensus we so foolishly fall victim …show more content…
The universe is not tailored to our individual wants and needs and with that comes the, “reality check” that ridicules the New Age idea that reality is as amenable as we believe it to be. New Age theorists argue that the simple act of changing one's perception and mindset can alter their whole world around them and everything that their reality entails. How someone wants to perceive their reality is their prerogative but, if I believe that I have the capability of flight, does that mean it is true simply because I demand it to be so? And if I jump off my roof, will I hit the ground? Humans cannot control every aspect of the universe, but can we still control our individual reality? Michael Trooper expresses his belief that we cannot create our own reality in, “Why You Don't Create Your Own Reality- an antidote for to fatuous New Age paradigms” and makes his argument by saying, “I am the process of individualization; but I don't create it.” We may have the power to control the trivial aspects of our lives but in the grand scheme of things, we can't influence the universe for our own

Those who are successful are not the ones who sit and wait for things to come to them, they are the ones who go out and get them. However, life is not always as easy as just going out and getting whatever you want with no struggle or adversity to overcome along the way. A critical part of life and becoming successful is overcoming the many obstacles and adversity that one will face on the path to greatness. Overcoming adversity is crucial; but an equally important aspect to obtaining success is having the mindset to accomplish anything. Ayn Rand, an accomplished philosopher and novelist, epitomizes said mindset with her famous quote, “The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.”…

In her spare time, Miranda often dreams up new scenarios for her graphic novel, Station Eleven, where she takes elements from her own life, and twists them into a new direction to create an ‘optimal insert’ for a character or a setting. People’s behavior changes accordingly to their state of awareness. People can change to their own individual abilities to let go of themselves. When one’s mode of consciousness is adjusted, so is the way the individual thinks or feels. By changing one’s state of awareness, individuals are able to grow and understand their reality more clearly— ultimately guiding them to become less narrow-minded. Individuals that can let go of their selves and envision their lived realities with an optimistic attitude are able to then find interest in their environment that they did not see before.…

Appearance and Reality in Ruta Sepetys’ “Between Shades of Gray” What is reality? This question has fascinated the human race since the beginning of time, but can never receive a concrete answer. Perhaps it is because humans exist in an artificial society that makes it nearly impossible to see past people’s made up facades. Possibly because the world contains billions and billions of minds that perceive events uniquely and incapable of fathoming anyone else’s reality but their own. Whatever the case might be, it is becoming noticeably more difficult to tell apart the truth from a convincing front.…

The ideas inside our head, and our experiences, shape the world we live in; the world that is out there and is unique for us. The world that we imagine and want to change, followed by our values, and ethics of how this planet should be like. In, Such Stuff as Dreams, Keith Oatley states that through art we experience emotions, possibilities for something else. Art acts as a medium to see, feel and think in different ways, and the possibilities in how the world and ourselves could change.…

Reality, a state of the world for what things truly are and as they truly exist. Reality has perplexed philosophers to an extent, but perhaps none more so than the maddening words of Descartes in his meditations. To say that his words are maddening is a bit ingenuous to Descartes, but what he does propose is out of place. There have been skeptics before Descartes, but the level of skepticism he reaches is quite absurd and even more, it would be absurd if it was even true and could not be refuted in any argument. To begin with Descartes’ evil genius, there will be two vital topics of discussion, doubt, and certainty.…

However, this approach centers around events causing people to think a certain way, whereas reality therapy is more concerned with internal reasons (based on needs) influencing people’s thinking. The premise behind REBT is that people experience events that influence their thoughts, causing them to feel a certain way, and in turn, behave accordingly. When people practice faulty thinking, they become upset, resulting in nonproductive actions (Gladding, 2016). Therefore, the idea is that through the group process, people can learn…

Throughout Orem’s works on the subject, she expresses a view which is consistent with science and the modern philosophical model of moderate realism. This position asserts that “there is a world that exists independent of the thoughts of the knower” and “although the nature of the world is not determined by the thoughts of the knower, it is possible to obtain knowledge about the world” (Alligood, 2014, p. 242). Also, in agreement with the moderate realist position, the SCDTN takes the view of human beings as, “dynamic, unitary beings who exist in their environments, who are in the process of becoming, and who possess free-will as well as other essential human qualities” (Alligood, 2014,…

A large and important topic in philosophy is the idea of what us, as humans, are in control of throughout our lives. Are we in control of every moment in our life, or is our life completely mapped out for us. This question leads us to two critical terms used by philosophers, free will and determinism. I will analyze these two theories and discuss different viewpoints that philosophers have regarding free will and determinism. I will explain how they interact with one another in an attempt to confirm my belief that yes, we have free will even if determinism is true.…
