Vision And Vision Of Leadership

Organizational leaders are tasked with more today than ever before. Faced with constant advancements in technology and communication, organizations now experience firsthand both the instant gratification and any potentially negative or damaging feedback from consumers. In this fast paced climate, it has become even more important for leaders to have a vision for their organization, to lead by example, and to have realistic expectations of themselves, their employees, and the organization as a whole. These three aspects of leadership will help ensure that an organization is successful, under the best of circumstances or when they may be faced with a potential crisis.
Vision
The presence of vision is a powerful enabler. (Dees, 2013) It is the leader’s responsibility to craft and cast such vision, and to keep it before his team. (Dees, 2013) It is a clear “condition setter.” (Dees, 2013) This vision provides a clear direction for employees to follow, allowing them to see the end result that they are working towards. If there is no clear vision, it is then up to leadership to develop a plan that everyone will get behind. When there is no vision, it can cause serious problems with the cohesiveness and production within an organization. The absence of vision creates organizational confusion because the employees do not have clear goals.

A recent study of law enforcement officers found that when field level supervisors are engaged in proactive activities, the volume of proactive activities by the officers they supervise almost doubles (Johnson, 2015.) This is true during the day to day operations of the organization, as well as and likely more so when the organization finds itself in the midst of a crisis. Without key qualities of leadership, an individual cannot fully provide their customers or its employees with the experiences they deserve. Without proper skills and reinforcement, leaders cannot foster a positive workforce or support their employees. Without certain key factors a leader or manager becomes just another employee, and not the leader they are required to be. Having leaders with the skills such as honesty, accountability, the ability to inspire and to delegate, and basic communication skills are all necessary parts to becoming proven and respectable leaders within a business.…

In order to be an exemplary leader the authors, Kouzes and Posner, (2012), describe five practices that need to be implemented. Each practice defines leadership and what a leader should strive to perfect in being successful. To model the way shares the same concept of practicing what you preach, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). If you want your subordinates to have a strong work ethic a leader must practice the same, by setting the example in order for others to follow, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). As a leader you must be willing to roll up your sleeves and put forth the effort, your actions will set the pace, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012).…

According to Thompson and McEwen (1958), the setting of goals is essentially a problem of defining desired relationships between an organization and its environment and even where the most abstract statement of goals remains constant, the practical application requires redefinition or interpretation as changes occur in the organization, the environment or both (p. 23). When making personnel changes in my maintenance department I included my management team and solicited their inputs. In an effort to include their opinions and address the core issues, compromises were made on both sides. When the meeting was concluded we left the room with a clear direction that was agreed and supported by all divisions and managers. Even though some changes were not ideal, the team was empowered to execute our mission and we’ve all been more dedicated to meeting the goals of the department.…

Leadership Kathy Dunlap Bethel University MOD 310 April 24, 2017 Kameke Payne Leadership No one theory of leadership has ever been accepted by all, but the common thought of leadership is that it is an influence process, occurs within a group, involves goals, and attainment. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…

The term “leadership”, as described throughout Unit 1 of our reading, is portrayed by one’s ability to influence and or develop those around him or her in a positive direction (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Additionally, a leader must possess the ability to motivate and direct others through collaborative communication in the attempt to achieve organizational objectives. Someone I find to be a great leader would be General George Patton of the United States Army.…

Effective leadership could contribute to the success of change. Leadership plays an important role in mobilizing organizational change, as can be seen in the Kodak case. According to the trait theory, effective leadership should have some key traits. Generic traits of the leaders might be similar, for example, Carp and Perez have some common traits such as job-relevant knowledge (Kirkpatrick and Locke, 1991). However, it cannot be easily concluded that traits alone are sufficient for effective leadership or the absence of some of these traits make them any less leader, because trait theory ignore the interaction between leaders and their followers as well as other situational factors (Robbins and Coulter, 2002).…
