Music is an incredible form of expression of many feelings. Whether the listener is happy or sad, there is always a song that they are able to connect with. A few songs that I have really connected with are “Crazy for You” by Adele, “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine, “Money Trees” by Kendrick Lamar and “Animal I Have Become” by Three Days Grace. I have found myself turning to some of these songs many times throughout my life, for not only the lyrics, but the sound of the instruments within the songs. The songs describe many stories that I can connect with. Adele’s love song “Crazy for You” describes the many different feelings and actions felt when a person is in love. This song has a slow tempo which makes it relaxing for the …show more content…
We all have times that we feel down but the members of this group describe overcoming these obstacles. The members of this group are Florence Welch the singer, Isabella Summers on the keyboard, Robert Ackroyd plays the guitar, Tom Monger plays the harp, Mark Saunders on the bass guitar and Chris Hayden participates in percussion. “Dog Days Are Over” is an uplifting, happy song that describes the celebration of overcoming rough times. This song has a very fast tempo combined with a strong and energetic beat. The overall pitch of this song is mid-range. Florence + The Machine provide loud and strong dynamics over the almost four minute song. Although the song seems long, the listener may not realize this because it is so catchy the listener may want to clap along. The vocals are often found to be harmonizing with the harp and percussion. Many of the phrases throughout this song describe the struggle one may go through, but the hope for things to get better. I always try to remind myself of this idea when I feel like I am struggling. I believe this is an important life …show more content…
Three Days Grace is a band made up of four members. Adam Gontier was the original vocalist but was replaced by Matt Walst in 2013. Other members of the band include Brad Walst who plays the bass guitar, Barry Stock who plays the lead guitar and Neil Sanderson who plays the piano. The 2009 song “Animal I Have Become” by Three Days Grace could be describing how the singer feels his actions have become out of control and is screaming for someone to help him. This song contains a fast tempo with strong upbeat instrumentals. The overall pitch of this song is low but contains loud dynamics which increase in the middle of the song. The melody is catchy and may make a person want to join in on head-banging. The singer’s vocals harmonize well with the guitar. The many phrases throughout the song describe how they feel like an animal and need help being tamed. Many people may feel dark impulses within themselves, whether it’s revenge, rage or anger. People often try to deal with these problems on their own but find it quite difficult. This song describes humbling ourselves and swallowing our pride to ask for help. I have had to remind myself of this lesson many times throughout my life because I have the tendency to want to do things on my own. It is important to know when to ask for help and this song helps me remember

Gray “Life is a deep and contemplative story stuck on repeat — love, loss, self-destruction, self-discovery” (1). Gray by Pete Wentz narrates the life of young Pete throughout the early years of Fall Out Boy, in which he was the bassist and songwriter. He struggled with drug abuse; more specifically with the anxiety and depression prescription drug Ativan, after he and his girlfriend broke up (more than once), which lead to two separate overdose attempts. Reading this story made me realize that so much more goes on behind the curtains of a musician’s life that they don’t share; we really need to appreciate the people who write and perform the songs we listen to every day, in sad times and happy, and the ones we hold so dear in our heart. We…

A few years ago, one of my good friends sent me some songs to listen to by a band that I had never heard of called Twenty One Pilots. Their sound was completely different from anything I had ever heard before, containing some rap, a ukulele, and a piano all in one album. No one song sounded like the other, but they all contained one common element: some type of deep message hidden in the lyrics. At first, I rejected the band, not liking the way the music sounded, but when I listened again, really paying attention to the lyrics this time, I fell in love immediately. Somehow, these short 3 minute songs by this almost totally unknown duo had utterly changed my entire perspective on life, and on the effects of music in particular.…

Music is a fundamental part of my being and has always been in my life. There is a warmth and fondness I feel every time I think of them. The link to all of these memories are music. Before joining the JBHS choir…

Something that has meaning, and powered me is this one song called “Hooyo” by Somalia. The word “hooyo” comes from Somali root word meaning “Mother.” This song talked a lot about this girl life and the things that she been through during her childhood, and the things that she overcome especially all the trials and challenges with the help of her mom. She also talks about how her mom been there for her from the start and how she do not want anything to mess up her relationship with her. She mentions the separation between the father and the family, and she never knew the reason why he left them, when she was young but when she became older and mature she finally understood the reason.…

“The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot” by Brand New, relates to me personally because of a friendship I came across in high school. When I listen to this song, it brings me back to my teenage years, when I was a young girl longing for a relationship with my dream guy. This band was introduced to me by an English teacher from highschool whom I had the biggest crush on. I connect with this song because it reminds me of the relationship I had with this teacher. At times I wonder what life would be like if there was a soundtrack playing in the background. The soundtrack would continue to play capturing every moment in life, although having a soundtrack playing in the background of my life is an impossible idea, there are still those certain songs that seem to sing in my head for every moment I have experienced in my life. I am frequently at a loss of words, but when I hear the right melody, everything falls in place it connects me with memories, places, people, and experiences. I have hundreds of songs that I listen to, but I want to focus on three that have a significant meaning to my life they are How Big are Angel Wings by Ashton Shepherd, True Friend by Miley Cyrus and How Can I Help You Say Goodbye…

Musical Stories Giving Comfort During Hardships Musical artists throughout the centuries sing about their hardships in music. The context of the song can be the theme of either life or death. Each song becomes literary by speaking to the depressed listener through emotions given by the lyrics or tone. Even if the song 's topic hasn 't been experienced by them directly. According to Levitin in the chapter explaining comfort songs, "The connection - even to a stranger - helps the process of recovery, for so much getting better seems to rely on feeling understood – one of the reasons why talk therapy is so successful in cases of depression" (Levitin).…
