Have you ever worked so hard for a lifelong dream of yours? And all of a sudden that dream is taken away from you. Well, Kevin Pierce has experienced this very action. The movie The Crash Reel, is a documentary showcasing Kevin’s training as an Olympic snowboarder. This documentary was immensely sentimental, and caught my attention throughout the whole movie. In addition to the storyline of Kevin’s journey, there were many themes present. The film showed the importance of family in order to succeed your dreams and the inspiration to never give up on your dreams when faced with obstacles. At the beginning of the movie, we knew Kevin would not make it to the Olympics, and the film continued to give the audience information for why this was true later on in the movie. I liked this film technique because it starts off the movie with suspense, and leaves the audience wondering what will happen next. Kevin did survive the brutal accident, but he will have to take a long road to complete a full recovery. Throughout the movie, we are shown Kevin’s progress of recovery through live footage. Day by day, Kevin’s health was improving immensely. One of the most important themes that stood out to me throughout this documentary was Kevin’s family support system. They were always seen to be extremely supportive of him and the dangerous sport that he loves, even if they had hesitations for his participation. It was inspiring to watch how close the Pierce family was, and Kevin’s accident only brought them closer together. Kevin’s mother and father stayed at the hospital with Kevin each and every night during his recovery. I believe that Kevin’s family played a impactful role in his triumphant recovery.
