It tells us that we all are different, yet the same inside. It shows that we all are quick to make assumptions about others based on their skin color or background. We see the characters in the movie evolving and we evolve with them. We see them learn of their mistakes and becoming better people. As the characters evolve, we became more and more emotionally involved with them. We start reevaluating our thoughts about racism and discrimination. The movie portrays all races in a balanced way. Whites, blacks, Asians and Hispanics are all shown as being capable of both good and bad. Haggis seeks to show that all people are flawed and the there is very little in the world that is black and white. It is in the gray areas that most people reside, and with each of the characters, there are undesirable characteristics as well as redeemable qualities.
