Cranberry: Urinary Tract Infection

Cranberry has been utilized traditionally for the prevention of urinary tract infections(UTIs), due to the compound called proanthocyanidins which have antibacterial activity. Several clinical research consults this theory. Cranberry, one of the fruits that have a desirable concentration of proanthocyanidin, are always considered to be one of the best food to prevent urinary tract infection. A group of researchers at the University of British Columbia designed and implement an experiment to figure out if using cranberry juice, which has a comparatively high concentration of proanthocyanidin, is more effective to prevent the Urinary tract infection. A group of 40 children, including 39 girls and 1 boy, were received cranberry juice with a high concentration of proanthocyanidin or no proanthocyanidin randomly and daily. After watching a year, the results showed a statistically significant decrease in risk of urinary tract infection between groups that did not have proanthocyanidin in the cranberry juice and the ones that did. Therefore, regularly intake of cranberry juice with a high concentration of proanthocyanidins may help young children to combat potential urinary tract infection.
