Wisconsin is the nation’s largest producer of cranberries. The cranberries are harvested in the fall - usually from September through the beginning of November. Cranberries grow on a group of dwarfed, evergreen shrubs. To harvest cranberries, the farmer floods the cranberry beds with 6 to 8 inches of water above the vines. The fruit is removed from the vines with a harvester. The harvested cranberries float in the water and using what’s called a boom the cranberries are corralled into a corner of the bed and pumped or conveyed out.
