Cranberries are an extremely popular American fruit that are commercially grown for the consumption of people. They are grown on low reaching shrubs or on vines that can grow up to two meters, and are harvested mostly in the fall specifically during the months October through December (6). Cranberries have been labeled as a “super fruit” due to their high nutritional value and properties as antioxidants (5). The food industry uses cranberries in a variety of products such as sauce, jam, and dried cranberries, but the fruit is most commonly consumed as cranberry juice. What is commonly called cranberry juice is actually the sweetened and diluted version of the pure, concentrated juice, most often with less than half pure cranberry juice per serving. In order to fully determine whether or not cranberry juice definitively can prevent UTIs, researchers must find better ways of measuring efficacy and conduct more research into this product. Even though it has not been approved by the FDA and there is not enough sufficient evidence to fully support that the treatment can prevent UTIs, patients should still have the juice in their daily diets. I would recommend this product to a female family member to help prevent UTIs from happening, but I would not recommend for them to take the regular sugary juice daily, instead endorsing the diet version of ocean spray. Even if there is no guarantee that UTIs would be prevented, there is no reason not to put it into a person’s every day diet. Until there has been an accurate study disproving that the juice is effective, or a prophylactic medication is produced that has been approved by the FDA, the regular consumption of cranberry juice is an excellent and safe preventative measure for women to take against
