The divide between the classes may be seen in the different descriptions of characters by Merricat, such as Stella, Constance, and Merricat herself. Stella is described as “the only one who managed to keep hold of any color at all. She was round and pink and when she put on a bright print dress it stayed looking bright for a little while before it merged into the dirty grey of the rest” (Jackson ?). Prince Escalus first refers to the men as “beasts” to capture how irrationally the two houses have been acting, and how their acting upon emotion rather than reason much like an animal, has caused a “pernicious rage” that plagues Verona’s streets (I.i.80-81). We know the men aren’t actually beasts, the Prince just uses this metaphor to show how a simple disagreement has torn the men from their values and brainwashed them to believe that their hate can only be tamed through “purple fountains issuing from [their] veins,” (I.i.83). Prince Escalus and the houses have a parent-child dynamic in this scene that reinforces how immature the houses have been acting by keeping grudges that are “bred on airy word,” (I.i.86). A word can’t actually be…
