Crafty-Personal Narrative

I was riding before I was a year old, it's almost second nature for me. Last year mum decided she would take on some boarders. As I had “grown out” of my pony Crafty, we looked for a new horse for me. We found a horse who passed mum’s many high standards. We had this horse, Reg was his name. On our farm for a long time and I had grown very attached to him. My mum, her boss and I had ridden him before, though mum said I brought the best out of him.

I had been riding Reg many months and one day would change everything. From here on in I remember none of the following. I got home and like any other day, I got my riding gear. My jodphurs, an old sweater, my back protector, helmet, and my tall, black show boots. Mum and I went to the barn to tack up Reg. He always made me laugh, the way he

With other horses and ponies such as my beloved Crafty, I have to pry his mouth open. We have an indoor arena, half mum and I use as our riding arena and half has some of our collection of antique machinery. However, we decided to ride outside on the 30th of April. Attached to the coverall is a field we use for turn out and riding. Mum had been giving me a lesson for awhile at this point in the day. There was a cavaletti down the center of the field and Reg and I had trotted over it a few times. After trotting over the cavaletti, mum instructed me to turn left. Moving my legs and applying pressure just behind and just in front of the girth. Making Reg bend “around” my legs. As we continue to trot down the post and rail fence, something about Reg changed. Mum told me to sit up and sit deep. As mum instructed me to do sit deep, Reg broke into a canter. I’d ridden his canter before, he’s actually the one who

Not Horse Play Although the world of horses is a very elaborate one, most people do not know the real cost and responsibility of owning a horse. Most horse breeds are bred for specific reason whether it be for beauty or brains. There really is no animal quite like the horse given how many different variations exist. In my hometown, I live in a community that has a large drive for tourism due to the horse race track located about ten minutes from my house.…

The lesson barn I was riding at pampered the horses by stabling and feeding grain. This farm that I call Next-Door did nothing more but provide acreage for the horses to graze on. It took me a while to get used to the drastic difference between the two. These farm horses were creative lawn ornaments and not for beginners to try to ride. My friend Sarah…

My own riding career thus far had been a roller coaster ride, tendency to second guess myself battled continually with my natural instincts. Over thinking things led me to over riding, and my mixed signals led my horse to produce ignorance. My consistence hesitation caused my horse and I to become mentally stuck. Each lesson was an interminable cycle of frustration, never reaching nirvana. Riding requires both horse and rider to become one.…

The time that I recall when I had to stop digging and solve a problem is when I was competing in a barrel racing event. Whenever I would began my race, leaving the alley- way headed towards the first barrel I never pushed my horse hard enough, which caused us to lose time. In order for me to fix the problem I had to go back into the practice pen and go over my fundamentals. When I went back over all of my fundamentals I figured out the problem. Which was I wasn’t being aggressive.…

I took my reins in my hand and steered her in the direction of the green, grassed field that was just several feet away. We went around the outside perimeter of the field for a couple laps just walking and trotting just to get a sense of how she was going to be. She was being so good we went up to a canter and she was perfect. That same great feeling came to me, the same one with my hair gently flowing through the wind while the sun was shining down and suddenly nothing else mattered to me.…

Trampled It was a cloudy Saturday morning in May. I was at the barn getting ready to have my horseback riding lesson just like I had done every other Saturday morning for the past eight years. Although this morning was different, instead of riding one of the regular horses, my instructor had me scheduled to ride a thoroughbred named Storm. This horse was still green and had not been fully trained on how to do much except race.…

Giving Up Is Never An Option Work hard, dream big, was always the APHA motto, but up until this point I didn’t fully understand what this meant with horse riding. I was showing at the American Paint Horse Youth Worlds show in Fort Worth, Texas and was competing with a horse I had just met two days ago. My trainer, Kelly Chapman, traveled to Texas with me and decided to put me in a jumping class. Now, if you know me you would definitely never put me in a jumping class because I have very little experience with it but, Kelly being the stern and enthusiastic trainer I know, had a lot of faith in me to compete well with my new horse Zeke.…

I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…

We didn't get very far until we had to slow to a walk again because Mckenna was wearing shorts and everytime we would trot her skin would uncomfortably rub the leather of the saddle and pinch. So we walked. Slowly. Soon the horses started prancing even more, and they were showing signs of fear, and eagerness to run. We, of course, could not let them run toward home because there is the risk of them never stopping, so we held them back in a walk.…

It had already been determined for me that I was going to race motocross before I was born. Although my family has since moved on from racing, it had been everything for as long as I can remember. I clearly remember the loud and hectic Friday nights and the chaotic Sunday mornings spent at the track. The dedication we, my two brothers and I, had towards the extreme sport and the dedication our parents showed towards our passion will forever be apart of me. By the time I was born, my family had already tried many various forms of racing: BMX, snowcross, or snowmobiles, four wheelers, and dirt bikes.…
