Crafting Inventory

I administered the spelling inventory first, which is used to help provide an estimation of stage of development for a specific student. When I began the test, I stated to the students “I am going to say some words that I want you to spell for me. Some of the words are easy to spell, and some will be more difficult. When you do not know how to spell a word, just do the best you can. Each time, I will say the word, then use it in a sentence, and then I will say the word again. It will not be graded because it is not a test (Ganske, 2000). This will only help me in become a teacher, but I an thankful you are all willing to take time from independent reading to help me.” The screening inventory included a list of twenty words, which are: hen, …show more content…
When administering the screen inventory, I did not stop when a child has spelled 0 or 1 word correctly out of any set of five. This did not occur in the beginning words, however did happen in the harder words. This was my mistake because I failed to recognize this during the time of administering the test. It was also difficult for me to notice all the spellings of the words completed by seven separate students that were not all in view of me. While I do accept this mistake, in a way I do believe that because all the students did try to write all 20 words, I did gain a better understanding of the level of spelling the students are placed. Also, this mistake may have been made because the students shocked me in how fast they were writing the words. I told the students they would have enough time to write each word in the spelling they believed it is spelled, however, the students did not even need the time I gave them. I believe this was because all the students had an understanding of how the word spells, even if incorrectly, the students did try to make the most sense of the words. Also, while each word did receive a sentence, for example I said “hen… The hen sat on her eggs…hen”, I made note that the students would start writing the word as soon as I said it. This showed me that the students were familiar with the words and did not need a sentence to help them

On September 17, I observed first grade, Elkhorn City Elementary teacher, Dana Sheets. These rambunctious students had just came back from lunch and were still phasing to settling down for their lesson. The teacher did a wonderful job of catching their attention through the transition of calming them. She had the students complete a word puzzle on the wall out of their spelling words. She had made the boards setup on the wall so that each student can just run up and connect a puzzle piece, in which case is one letter to help spell the word out, the next student would follow behind, completing another word and eventually they would have the word spelled out.…

The reason I chose to weigh Seraphina’s Promise, chapter quiz 25/25 is because this assignment is based on the student’s ability to listen, comprehend, and answer questions pertaining to the text through a paper test. The book will be read orally, chorally, or listened to via audio and the students will work with a partner to answer the questions. Therefore, I feel that this style of assignment should be worth a smaller percentage of the student’s grade.…

These small errors show that texting may only lead to students lacking in spelling and grammar in writing but not completely changing the style. Shafie states that “Yet there are surprisingly a lot of spelling errors both in-class assignments and examination scripts. This finding suggests that the participants are not able to recall the right spellings when the situation arises.” (Shafie, 2008, p. 30). Thus meaning that Cullington showed strong evidence but the study brings around the statement that texting has a small effect on grammar and spelling but not an overall change in style of…

Word Identification As suggested by the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 administrator’s manual instructions, the first grade word list was administered, to determine the instructional reading level to establish a starting point on the reading assessment. The QRI-4 guideline suggested Addison begin reading the word lists at the first grade level of the QRI-4, two levels below her current grade level. Addison completed the first grade word list automatically with 100% accuracy, in the allotted time, signifying she read the words at the independent level. When analyzing the second grade word list, Addison automatically identified 90% of the words, indicating she was identifying words at the independent level, although the score decreased 10%…

A comprehensive analysis of the spelling features utilized by each student established an extensive range of orthographic knowledge within the class. Due to the wide range of orthographic knowledge represented from the assessment data it is essential that instruction between the students is differentiated and systematically targets the significant features necessary for each students’ development to the subsequent stage of their progress. The assessment data…
