CPL’s on Campus
December, 14th, 2012, marks a day when the controversy of gun control, and CPL licences were brought to light by a tragic event. The children and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary School, were completely unsuspecting of the tragedy that would strike that morning. When the students and teachers should have been celebrating that it was almost christmas break, instead they were locked in their classrooms in terror. As a man broke into the school, threatening all of their lives. Sadly 6 teacher lost their lives doing whatever they could to protect their students, including Victoria Leigh Soto a first grade teacher at the school it has been found that “When she became aware there was a gunman in the school, she hid her first-graders in closets and cabinets, then told the shooter they were in the gym. He turned the gun on Soto, killing her, but none of her students were harmed.” (CTPost)Even with teachers as brave as her, there were still 20 children killed.
But what could have stopped the gunman, many people in the news said things about banning guns, and that if he wouldn't have been able to get that gun they would all still be alive. The thing is none of that is true. The gun he used was not his and was in fact stolen.

He continued by adding this statement, “The 2nd amendment is necessary for the sustainability of a Free State.” So in order for teachers and students to feel free and have their rights upheld from what he has stated he believes that this means that they deserve the right to choose rather or not a teacher should have a CPL in the

School Shootings Are Not Enough for Stronger Gun Control Laws The Jonna Semeiks article “We the People Confront Sandy Hook” discuses many different factors that contribute towards explaining why school shootings and gun violence are inadequate to inspire stronger gun control laws. The deaths of children are not enough to offset the strong ties that American society has towards guns as a symbol of freedom, which causes people to respond with internal defense mechanisms that numb the pain of these tragic events instead of feeling a need to take corrective action. Semeiks presents a valid point that gun control reforms are needed; however, in order for that to happen anytime soon, the American people will need to largely shift their attitude on this topic. The author provides several examples successfully supporting that main idea.…

In the case of Sandy Hook Elementary, many have suggested that having armed guards at schools to control gun violence would be a start in the right direction in curbing gun violence in schools. This is considered a temporary solution until stricter laws are developed and put into place on purchasing guns. Veronique Pozner, one of the parents who lost a child, said that “I think there might be a certain power in deterrence. In the case of Newtown, it 's clear that the perpetrator did choose the path of least resistance, the most vulnerable defenseless victims. He didn 't head for the high school where he could have been tackled.…

“Some might contend that forbidding teachers or another school employees to carry firearms on school grounds is a nonissue because having teachers carrying concealed weapons may create heightened risk and decrease school safety” (Kelley 1). This increases the risk of a student finding the gun and using it in any inappropriate way or the risk of it getting in the arms of the wrong person. “Although most efforts to arm teachers and school administrators have hit legislative roadblocks, the underlying issue of how to best maintain a safe school environment persists. School safety is always relevant and school leaders are charged with maintaining order and security in the school environment. It remains important that school leaders are informed of relevant and prevailing law and viewpoints and developments on both sides of such an important issue” (Kelley…
