The novel, The Pearl, tells a story of a poor family in Mexico. Kino is the male protagonist and Juana is the female protagonist. The novel tells of the hardship they had to come through as a poor family with a sick child. Coyotito is the child of Kino and Juana, and after Coyotito was bitten by a scorpion the family struggled to provide the proper care Coyotito needed. Kino’s and Juana’s motivation are the same at the beginning of the novel but soon change at the end. At the beginning of the novel Juana’s and Kino’s motives were the same.
