I walked out as I saw my brother and Juana approaching out of the mountains. They were full of despair and I look at Juana’s arms and only to see the bloody blanket with the remains of Coyotito. I called Apolonia outside to see the dreadful situation her in-laws were in. I’ve told Kino before that the pearl will bring disastrous consequences, but he didn’t listen and now his son had died. Out of all the poor choices that Kino had made he finally made one good choice. He walked to the water’s edge and flung the pearl into the ocean. “But where will you get the money for learning to be a teacher?” Apolonia asked.
“I have money from my corn grinding job that I was saving for Coyotito’s education. We can use that money. I think it’s a great idea Kino. What do you say Juan Thomas?” Juana said.
“Yes, it is a great idea.” I answered.
Later that night, I couldn’t sleep because I was nervous about Coyotito. I walked outside to think, when I saw Juana doing the same thing. I sat down and asked her why she couldn’t
