Many years ago, laying out on the trampoline late at night, I remember hearing the coyotes howl and yip in the field bordering my friend’s house. The sound so frightened us that we promptly rushed inside. To children that grew up never truly in the country, only on the edge of town, coyotes seemed so wild. However, as Dan Flores illuminates in his book, Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History, that encounter was not an unusual experience at all. In the past century coyotes have spread across all reaches of the United States.…

In both Lord of the Flies and A Long Way Gone, William Golding and Ishmael Beah depict the plight of young boys who are forced to endure various hardships. Through their characters’ adversity, both Golding and Beah suggest that fear and the struggle to survive may result in the degeneration of civilization and logical thought, the loss of one’s humanity, and the corruption of leaders. Both Golding and Beah illustrate how society can collapse due to terror and chaos. For example, in Lord of the Flies, the boys heatedly debate the existence of a monster, and “to Ralph...this seemed the breaking of sanity” (Golding 88). Golding clarifies how the boys’ fear of the beast makes them wary and unreasonable, hinting at the start of their civilization’s…

Trickster God Vs. Trickster Figure The readings help the readers come up with their own conclusions of whether there is a clear distinction or similarity between Hermes, the trickster god and the coyote, the trickster figure. It is clear for the audience to elude that there are more differences between the two figures than there are similarities. Hermes is seen in a lighter sense, more helpful and beneficial towards the gods and humanity itself but the coyote has a darkness to him, he is destructive towards people in his trickster form.…

When was the last time you picked up a children's book and actually read it? I am talking just reading it by yourself, not to a little kid. Sofia and Aalyah read two children books titled Horton Hatches the Egg by the famous Dr. Seuss himself, and Hairy Maclary's Showbusiness written by Lynley Dodd. Both of these well written books have a common theme. That theme being perseverance, meaning the characters in each book never gave up, even during difficult times.…

Most trickster tales also show a glimpse of the brighter side of a trickster, or the helpful side. For instance, the King in Master Cat, or Puss in Boots says to Marquis de Carabas “It is up to you whether you want to become my son-in-law or not…”. This shows that the cat helped Monsieur Marquis gain the King’s trust enough to allow Marquis to marry his daughter. Another example is in the story Coyote Steals Fire, when the narrator says “They hurried all over the world, bringing fire to every tribe on earth.” Coyote is helpful in the fact that he was able to steal and help bring fire to the tribes of the world.…

For my Comparative Literature assignment, I will be comparing Jack London’s Call of the Wild and Leo Tolstoy’s “Master and Man”. One of the central themes of Call of the Wild is nature vs. nurture, which is demonstrated through the main character Buck and his regression into an almost feral state. A central theme for “Master and Man” is human foibles, shown through Vasili’s overall character flaws and treatment of Nikita. While each story has their own central theme, they also share a common theme in the humbling power of the natural world. This is displayed in Call of the Wild through Buck’s interactions with his new surroundings and environment, and in “Master and Man” through Vasili and Nikita’s experience in the snow storm.…

Angela Carter’s collection of short fiction stories are written with a feminist approach to fairy tales and are heavily centred around the females experience of the world within the text. In her short story The Erl-king there is an extended metaphor of birds that is used to shape the representation of females and an implied metaphor of wolves that represent males. Birds represent the ideal submissive and obedient female . The birds in the story are lured, captured and put in cages by the Erl-king in which he takes home as pets. It is later revealed in the ending of the story that the birds are actually young girls that were lost in the woods, transformed into birds by the Erl-king.…
