Cows are likely the most exploited species in our world. They are constantly overused for food, clothing, and entertainment. 6.6 million cows are killed each year after living their sad lives in cramped uncomfortable conditions just so humans can eat beef. Cows are also commonly used for leather. Although leather is commonly a byproduct of the beef industry, it has its own set of consequences caused by production and treatment. Cows are also used for entertainment. Bull fighting and racing includes locking the bull in a dark room with no food or water for up to two days, and then exposing them to loud environments that scare them into running and acting out. All forms of the exploitation of cows has major …show more content…
Animal agriculture is the number one cause of water pollution globally. Factory farming produces approximately 450 billion tonnes of manure annually , and this has a horrible effect on the the environment. The manure is stored for long periods of time, and as it breaks down it emits gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and methane. These tanks are commonly stored very close to the bovine and workers and exposes them to harmful chemicals. When the manure is sprayed over fields of crops, more pollution is created. Factory farming is responsible for more water pollution than all other industrial sources combined. This is mainly from the manure either being dumped into waterways, or being used as fertilizer while rainwater washes the fertilizer into waterways. The antibiotics given to the cows to fight illness caused by poor diets and cramped conditions are washed into waterways, and are carried into the foodchain. In the leather industry, very high amounts of harmful chemicals are used to treat the leather. This includes mineral salts, lime sludge, formaldehyde, oils, and dyes. The tanneries use a process with these chemicals to stop the product from biodegrading. All of these chemicals end up flowing through waterways, and polluting the
