At my current job, I teach students art. Art is used as a form of therapy. Sometimes students come in stressed, are having a bad day and are not feeling like themselves. In my art class they are able to express themselves in a unique form. Art takes them to their happy place and I feel accomplished when they leave my art class with a smile on their face. I also communicate with parents an office staff to make sure that the child is successful. My previous job experiences have prepared for a career in the social work field. My personal characteristics will influence my development as a professional social worker by making me an ideal candidate for the position. I am determined, flexible, have strong interpersonal skills and am extremely organized. I determined to obtain a master’s degree in social work. I will hard and not stop until I reach my goal. My flexibility will allow me to obtain my degree. My strong interpersonal skills will help me be successful in my internships. I will use the skills acquired through the program and my existing experience working with children since I was 16 years old, to help students whose families need additional resources to be successful in life.

In my advanced year of study, I would like to work with the children, youth and women client population. I have selected this population because I enjoy working with children and I am also very passionate about working with youth. When I was attending high school, I encountered a life changing experience. My aunt was assaulted and battered by a group of young female gangsters who wanted to steal her purse. She had to go to the hospital because she had several injuries. My aunt’s suffering was extremely heart breaking. If those young females were focused on their learning and were pursuing a college education that incident would have never occurred. During the trial, we learned that these young women had dropped out of high school, did not have supportive families, and had long criminal records. Their situation had a profound effect on my career goal of social work; my goal became to help the youth. All of the years of negativity that I have endured sparked
