These rules were quite controversial. They advocated envy, adultery, and many more sinful things. The society in this Medieval period was relatively Catholic. The Catholic Christian perspectives of love are clearly stated in the Bible. 4 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” 5 “It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” 6 “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” 7 “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13: 4-7). These rules seem more realistic, moral, and agreeable with the current society. The rules of courtly love and God’s view on love are completely different and contradictory. Courtly Love was very racy and sometimes had a negative connotation based primarily on the fact that it was a sexual desire and an idealistic advocate that contradicted the prominent Christian church significantly.
Courtly Love was an important idea in the Middle Ages that might have been controversial, but gave many people an unorthodox outlet to their seemingly structured lives. Courtly Love is polemic but beautiful at the same time. It is nice to think of all the troubles the knights went through for their ladies. I wish the world was a little more like that now and a little less realistic. But a girl can always dream for that chivalrous knight that will one day sweep
