FAQs About Court Jesters
Q: How were court jesters looked upon by other members of the community?
A: Most jesters were there for the entertainment of the King, not for the nobles. Although, they were not looked upon as prestigious members of the community, they were still part of the royal court and had security in the fact that they worked for the king. (Evans, 2017)
Q: What did court jesters do when they were performing?
A: Court jesters’ main focus was to entertain the king and uplift his mood. They did many different things during their routines, including dancing, acting and mocking. Jesters usually made jokes about noblemen or even the king to get a laugh from the audience. …show more content…
They also had influence in the court and could give financial stability to relatives if needed. An example of this is when Will Sommers gave financial assistance to his uncle. Although court jesters were not rich, they did somewhat have a sense of financial security because they lived at the castle and were given food. ("Medieval Court Jesters," 2017)
7. Q: Were there court jesters that travelled to different cities to perform?
A: Court Jesters employed by the royal court would stay and perform for the king. While normal court jesters would travel place to place looking for money. These court jesters usually were not very successful in their search for money and lived in poverty. Most of these people also did not have a place to live so that was another reason for their traveling. (Evans, 2017)
8. Q: Where did the court jesters live and what were their living conditions like?
A: Court Jesters employed by the king lived either in the castle or in a cottage nearby. While the traveling court jesters had no permanent place to live. Travelers always had to worry about where they would be sleeping. Depending on who the court jester was, they could be living in a decent or even a really nice place.
