Atticus does not believe that anybody can be fundamentally good or bad. He believes that everybody can change, and that even the worst people among us can let go of evil. This is shown throughout the novel, as he demonstrates how he views that men can be equal. While in the courthouse, he voices that “There is one way in which all men are equal- there is one human institution where a stupid man is the equal of an Einstein. That institution is a court.”…

The Trials of Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird and “The Scottsboro Boys” both deal with discrimination in the 1930’s where discrimination was formidable and a way of life. “The Scottsboro Boys” were nine black youths. The youths were accused of raping two white women Victoria Price and Ruby Bates who traveled with a few white companions. Despite the fact that there was little evidence, the boys were still convicted of the crimes. That is a very close similarity to the fictional trial of Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird.…

This happens everywhere, not just in Maycomb or just in the state of Alabama. Even if you were told not to judge people by their looks, some made you turn your head and judge anyways.…

Society has a huge influence on how people act and what they do, and it victimizes people by creating scenarios that are a lose-lose situation. Just like the case of Mayella Ewells in To Kill a Mockingbird or the 2 girls who accused the Scottsboro boys of rape. Mayella Ewells, Ruby Bates, and Victoria Price are all accusers and victims because of society. Mayella Ewells and Ruby Bates have been made victims of our society.…

During the 1930’s the court systems were not equal by any standard, with the Tom Robinson case being a great example. “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (299). This quote comes straight from Atticus’s own mouth, and goes to prove that blacks during that time period had the short end of the stick. Besides being treated unfairly on a daily…
