As society has continued to develop, education has become a stepping stone to furthering an individual’s future. Noting the changes in the technological landscape, Coursera is a company that is fostering the evolution of computerized expansion and society’s yearning to do things faster, more efficiently and for a lesser price. It is no surprise that the technological aspects of Coursera’s platform acts as a huge resource for the company, particularly regarding their mobile applications and their integration with third party applications. Signature Track was a toe into the world of higher education recognized courses, but the overall lack of transfer options leaves Coursera relatively moot in its ability to move into a model that can charge its consumers. With certifications that are unknown, or unlikely to garner an individual any extra credit, the usefulness of Signature Track is undefined.

In addition, the Coursera brand itself is lacking, but this could be due to the relative newness of MOOCs in the higher educational marketplace. As a substitute to traditional higher education, Coursera is almost unheard of. While the backing and partnerships of prestigious universities seems to be spread across the competitors, it remains to be seen what sets each company apart. For the last few decades there was a great push that emphasized getting a degree. Whether it was eager parents who did not have the chance to pursue higher education themselves, or the increased educational requirements in the job market today, getting a degree became the next logical step after leaving high school. While some of the world is offering free higher education, the prices remain astronomical in other sectors of the world, particularly in the United States. Although Canada has faired better than its southern neighbours, there is a push for cheaper and faster means of getting a leg up in the job market. When spending four years in full time school no longer guarantees graduates a job that is good enough to pay off their student loans, individuals begin to look elsewhere. Substitutes that also offer individuals some of the same offerings are things like internships, apprenticeships and practicum that provide on the job training. Individuals who view higher education as too far of a leap may opt to be trained on the job instead. Alternatively, entrepreneurs may find that the skip the education and the job itself and instead become self employed. Some companies offer fellowship grants to facilitate entrepreneurial skills, and companies like Google are renowned for letting their employees explore their own creative interests.
