Course Reflection and Professional Application

While conducting research in this course, I came across a quote from Cesar Chavez, “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens the community – and this nation”. Prior to this course, I was knowledgeable about the cultural, linguistic, and learning needs in my classroom. What I have learned is the importance of not only knowing about the diversity but being able to address it professionally and provide the best possible education for every student. I learned the importance of involving and communicating with the families of my diverse learners as well as the community. I will continue to educate myself about best

Through analyzing the diversity in my building and the changing demographic trends, I realized the dire need for professional development and support. Without training and outreach programs throughout the school community, there will continue to be groups of students that are underserved. In my building, this underserved population continues to be our Hispanic students. Per the District Report Card Data for 2015-2016, there are 9,987 students in my district, 1,137 are Hispanic, we have nine interpreters, and zero English Language Learner (ELL) specialists (Ohio Department of Education, 2016). This is a problem that must be addressed. This population is expected to grow to 30% in the next ten years (Laureate Education, 2015d). Increasing linguistic support is essential. It is impossible to communicate with families and students without ELL support, and without this communication, it is impossible to “create equitable and inclusive practices that lead to positive social change” (Walden University, 2016, p. 3). Currently, I am using technology to communicate with my ELL students. It is the only option I have, and it is my professional responsibility to educate these students to the best of my ability. Until ELL support is more readily available, I will continue to use Google translate to communicate with my ELL students daily for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Like most people, the third grade was a highly intense time. This was the period in which you had to decipher between wanting to learn how to multiply or learn how to divide first. Or for me the most difficult decision may have been choosing between kickball and tetherball during recess. But I had an issue of seeing adults doing things and if it was simple I would do them too. For me as a child I had what many considered an old sold.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

Introduction I have selected to critique the trends of multicultural education and culturally responsive teaching. Throughout my studies at the University of Georgia I developed a passion for diverse and multicultural learners. My place of employment has been known as a melting pot for learners that have represented a multitude of cultures. I have worked with minority students living in poverty daily, and I found that my recent studies regarding multicultural education and culturally responsive pedagogy has been the overarching theme of my studies that has directly impacted my view of diverse learners and my teaching style.…

Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University.…

I'm not going to do a whole bunch of research to demonstrate this well-known point, because I'm not getting paid at all right now so I really don't care. But I will use my own personal experience working at community colleges as an adjunct in Ohio. The three colleges I've worked at, one four-year university and two community colleges, pay anywhere between 425-500 a credit hour per semester. So, for one three credit hour course from Sept. - December, I'll make a total of $1500 before taxes for the semester.…

English has always been my favorite subject as it provides a solid foundation for every subject. It makes you understand things better and then express logically whatever you think. I know I can do the harder problems of mathematics and physics, I love working on mathematical theorems and equations, but I always used to struggle in English. One of the major reason is that it is not my first language and I am from such a country where it is not widely spoken. I always had a lot of ideas in my mind, but I had no clue that how to organize them and make them effective.…

Here at UCI, I have taken many writing courses before this class such as AC Eng. 20B, AC Eng. 20C, AC Eng. 20D, AC Eng. 28, Writing 39A, and Writing 39B. Writing has always been my biggest fear and it is something that I have the most difficulty doing it because English is not my first language that I have learned in my life. In addition, I never had any problem communicating with people, but when it comes to writing, I always have to go through a lot of struggles to put them into words because most of the time I find myself repeating the same concept throughout my writing, which most likely to make me go off topic. That lack of skills would always indicate in my academic paper. My experiences with the previous writing courses was not very…

In this paper, I will discuss how this class influenced my understandings about my own cultural identity while also learning about the identities of my future students. Incorporating multiculturalism within my classroom will be beneficial for my students because we live in a diverse society. I will incorporate my research and group presentations on Latino/Hispanic, Women/Girls, Poverty/Homelessness, LGBTQ, and American Indian students when working with my future students, who identify with the specific community. My classroom environment, curriculum, materials, and instruction will reflect my cultural responsiveness in order for my multicultural students to be successful. Overall, the experiences I had this term provided me with strategies to effectively support my multicultural students.…
