This course was very interesting to me as I believed as an addict and alcoholic that I knew a great deal about substance abuse, drug use and methods to treat addiction, as I have attended a 12 step based in patient program, as well as a cognitive behavioral therapy based program during my incarceration in the Federal prison system.
I however did obtain new information about the video series such as how alcohol effects the brain, and not just the liver. I always believed that it just destroyed the liver, boy was I mistaken. I also became more aware of just how common inhalants are among children my own daughter’s age, and how the use can freeze someone’s lungs. I will use this information and educate my child on the dangers of these substances. I was able to learn visually through the video series in conjunction with the written material offered in my book which assisted in learning this subject more efficiently. I was also able to gather more facts about the different times of drugs, and further my knowledge of the ones I was not very aware of, such as opiate addiction. This course has inspired me, as I have enrolled in ASD 102 next semester and shown my path in life. I firmly believe that the addict and alcoholic who meets me will benefit from learning that you can hit rock bottom and get back up. I am fortunate that I did not become a statistic and die from my drug and alcohol addiction. I am a firm believer that just because you make mistakes in life you are not a failure, I would like to give back to society the tools that were shared with me in an effort to save another addicts
