secondary groups. What primary and secondary groups are you part of?
In the learning module it defined primary groups as a group consisting of intimate, face-to-face interaction and long lasting relationships which also have a powerful influence on an individual’s personality or self-worth(Group Dynamics, n.d.). On the other hand, secondary groups are defined as larger in membership, less intimate, and shorter lived. Secondary groups tend to also be less significant in the emotional lives of individuals(Group Dynamics, n.d.).
An example of a primary group in my life would be my family. I have very close ties with my family, and they also have a lot of influence over who I am today and what my life is like. Another primary group would be with my friends. I have great relationships with my small group of friends and I know that I can trust them and be myself around them. What in-groups are you a part of?
The definition of in-groups is a group to which a person belongs and with which a person feels a sense of identity.(Group Dynamics, n.d.). Whereas out-groups are groups to which a person does not belong and toward which the person may feel a sense of hostility(Group Dynamics, n.d.).
Some examples of in-groups from my life would be our school’s Speech club which I joined and I feel very secure in that group and it gives me a sense of purpose and identity. Another in-group I am a part of is the Thespians and Drama club. I love working with others who have a passion for acting and being on stage just like me. Another in-group in my life would be my dance class. We are a tight knit group of girls who look out for each other and support each other no matter what. Even though I never thought much about the groups I am involved in, in-groups and out-groups play a significant role in my life.
