Courageous Athlete Scholarship Essay

I played field hockey at Hudson High School from eighth to twelfth grade and I was captain for my senior year. I think my leadership of the team this past year demonstrates my possession of courage perseverance, enthusiasm, dedication, and determination.
The season was off to a rough start before it even started; our team was very inexperienced because we graduated thirteen seniors and five other players quit. A majority of the players were two so we were starting from square one. Nonetheless, I was optimistic and determined. As the only senior, and one of three upperclassman, I had been playing the longest and was determined that I would be able to lead the team to greatness. I was disappointed when we did not, but I did not let it stop me from trying.

I took it upon myself to encourage everyone to remain optimistic and try even harder to do well. My strategy helped us improve, and even if we still were not winning, we were at least acting as a team and making small adjustments, especially in communication and overall teamwork.
In the middle of the season, I was hit in the head and got a concussion. The hardest part of my recovery was being told that I could not go to games or practices; I could not even go to watch. After begging the school nurse and my doctor, I was allowed to go a watch, where I became the team’s biggest cheerleader. I missed a third of the season in total, but when I returned, I became determined to win a game. I talked to the team and told them my goal and we all agreed that we would, together, practice harder, run faster, hit the ball harder and overall just have more

To all the seniors that cared about me as an quiet incoming freshman, I owe them everything that I have accomplished this year. So, when they laid out on the field after conceding a PK in double overtime, I felt it my personal mission to help each and every one of them up and tell them about the great game that they had just played. It is because of this interconnected care that we have between each other that we were even in the position that we were…

Therefore, this was a team of small freshmen and sophomores playing against mostly juniors and seniors at the varsity level in one of the most talented high school conferences in the state. We finished the season 1-15, most of which were pretty tough losses but we worked hard and left it all on the field every game and that in the end is all that matters. The most prevalent memory was after the last game all the players were pretty upset about how it went but our coach ended our last huddle with, “We came into this season knowing it would be challenging and we worked hard from start to finish and I think we ended this season better than we started, which means that next year is gonna be a pretty good…

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

The golf course is not a location where I ever expected to feel content, but after the last four years, it is a place where I feel at home. It isn’t just the sound of a whispering breeze making its way through the trees, or the way that my feet sink ever so slightly into the soft earth that lies beneath the well-maintained grass; it’s what the course represents as a whole. Each of my four years in high school, I have dedicated myself to being on the golf course nearly every day during the Girl’s Golf season, and in this time, I have acquired knowledge that has shaped who I am today. When I tried out for the team freshman year, I had little experience in golf and admit that I was lucky to have even made the team. That first year I didn’t get to play in many matches, but as the season came to an end, I was…

Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…

Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…
