“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” -Maya Angelou. Courage is the fuel that gives the oppressed the power to stand up against the unjust. Courage gives even the most crushed, maltreated, and abused people the potential competence to make a change in the world. Courage lets one practice peace, kindness, and work for freedom. Poet and activist Maya Angelou is an exemplary illustration of a person who used courage to fight, not only for their own rights, but the rights of a whole race. Maya Angelou was and continues to be one of the most powerful civil rights activists of all time, and her words and actions continue to have an impact on racial prejudice today through her journalism, protests, and numerous poetical and literary works.

Maya was born on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri as Marguerite Johnson. A childhood nickname from her brother, Bailey, who could not pronounce Marguerite, gave her the name ‘Maya.’ Soon after her birth, Maya’s parents split. Maya and her older brother Bailey, spent the majority of their childhood in the tiny segregated town of Stamps,Arkansas, where her fraternal grandmother lived. About four years later, Maya’s father came to Stamps, and brought Maya and Bailey to St. Louis, to live with their fraternal mother. The years the two spent in St. Louis were troubled and traumatic and not long after they returned to their grandmother in Arkansas.
