“You have the courage, let me give you the strength.” (“The Giver”, movie) In the novel, “The Giver” by Lois Lowry Jonas is the main character who lives in the community. Jonas is an Eleven who is about to become a Twelve. The Ceremony of Twelve is one of the most important ceremonies. It is when they are given an assignment which is their job until they go to the House of the Old. Jonas was anxious to receive his assignment, but his number is skipped. He finds out that he was selected rather than assigned. He is to become the next Receiver, a person who gains the memories from generations back and back and back. When he was first selected to be the Receiver of Memory at the Ceremony of Twelve, the Chief Elder listed qualities that were required to be the receiver. “‘He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have…”Courage,’ she went on… ‘It was he who reminded us, again and again, of the courage required....’’But we feel certain that you are brave.”’ (p. 62-63) The Committee had been observing Jonas for years, and they had come to the conclusion that Jonas was brave, even if Jonas didn't feel brave at the time. He was also brave enough to question the wasy things are done in his society. He claims that it is unfair everyone has to live without emotions and color, and he wants to do something about it. He knows that he could be killed if he is caught, but he was willing to take the risk for Gabriel and for the Community. He could have left Gabriel behind which would mean the child’s death, but his brotherly love for him caused Jonas to take Gabe with him. Although The Giver and Jonas had planned his escape very thoroughly, Jonas went against practically everything in order to save Gabriel. Jonas had broken multiple rules in order to flee with Gabriel. He had left his dwelling at night, he stole food from the community, and he stole his father’s bike. “But it was necessary because it had the child seat attached to the back. And he had taken Gabriel, too.” (p.166 ) Jonas breaking the rules shows that his courage has grown. He is aware that he could be severely punished, (such as release, which Jonas now knows what it is) but he still takes the risk and attempted to leave the community, with Gabriel. He is faced with the unknown as he heads off to the other side of the river and to places he has no knowledge about. He doesn't have a real plan or any support, but he acts upon his choice knowing that there is no going back. His decision was final and he knew
