In The Book Thief, based on the events that take place, Markus Zusak is able to convey the theme “Courage is needed when completing deeds of goodness,” by using conflict development. The first example of an act of goodness requiring courage is when Walter, Max Vandenburg’s childhood friend, makes the dangerous journey to Hans Hubermann to be informed whether or not Max Vandenburg would be able to stay with them. In this case, Walter Kugler is going against the Nazi society. He decides that it is more important to save a life than to do what is expected of him.
