These points are selflessness, staying positive in the face of adversity and facing fears. The first definition of selflessness means that one focuses on others before oneself. Selflessness can be found in the folktale, “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.” The eldest daughter knows that her family is poor, and so she takes up the white bear’s offer. The eldest daughter is truly courageous, for she did not question the bear, she only saw an answer to her family’s plight. Similar to the eldest daughter, a young girl from the folktale, “The Warrior Maiden” acts in a similar manner. A word that has many meanings and is shown in many different ways. Willie Mays showed courage by taking the field and proving that he could play the game the right way, and that whatever people thought about him didn’t matter. Atticus Finch showed courage the same way, by “taking the field” against the long standing tradition of Maycomb, which was that if a black man was accused of something wrong against a white woman, he was guilty no matter if it could be proven he was innocent. Atticus defended and proved this black man innocent, whether the verdict was innocent or guilty is a different story. Tom Robinson showed courage by fighting the long standing unwritten code that a black man was not to feel guilty or sorry for a white woman.…

In both works of literature, the idea of courage that is being conveyed is the ability to do something that one knows is right or gracious, even though it is extremely difficult.…
