He showed many acts of bravery throughout the novel. He almost always did the right thing and stood up for what he believed was right. Towards the middle of the book, Atticus defended Tom Robinson even though Tom was black and everyone was against him in the trial. That took true courage. At some point in the book, Atticus mentions that it is important to stand up for personal beliefs even if the odds are awful. He says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). He means that even though history says they are going to lose, that does not mean they do not have to try. Helen was not in the book all that much, but she was still very strong and valiant. She was a character that never gave up and always stayed strong. She experienced many difficulties throughout her life. She went through the trial of her husband, the imprisonment of her husband, the death of her husband, and her illness. To Kill a Mockingbird mentions this hardship. It says, “She just fell down in the dirt, like a giant with a big foot just came along and stepped on her” (Lee 322). This shows how rough of a time she was going through. Even though all of this had happened, she still had the grit to face life and keep living. She kept fighting and wanted to live more than anything. She was courageous enough to face the things that life threw at her. Her audacity is simply
