Every person on Earth is given the gift of courage. However, there are very few that take advantage of this gift. To be courageous does not necessarily mean to be daring or reckless. An act of courage could be as simple as saying a nice thing about someone. It is important to have courage because of the fact that our society is lacking courageous people. Without people who will stand up against the wrong things in our society, those who do bad things will never change their ways. Unless someone speaks up, nothing will ever change. So what exactly is courage? Courage is the ability to stick up for yourself and/or others. Courage is shown when someone stands up for what is right, perseveres in the face of adversity, faces suffering with dignity or faith, or feels fear and yet chooses to act.

To be courageous is a challenge. When one feels fear, it is very difficult for them to choose to act. This is proven in the article Little Things Are Big, when a man tells a story-set in the 1950’s-about how he sees a mother with three children carrying a large suitcase in one hand, and her baby in the other. He wants to help the woman, but is afraid she is prejudice-for he is a black Puerto Rican man and she is a young white woman. not to mention it was hours past midnight at a subway station. These were his thoughts: “What do I do if she screamed when I went to offer my help? I hesitated. And then I pushed by her like I saw nothing as if I were insensitive to her needs.” He later regrets his decision, but his story is proof that fear can keep you from doing what you think is right because he knew that he should have helped the woman, but the fear of rejection stopped him.
