The accounts of bravery he witnessed in 1971 are described as “Mike got himself a piece of white cloth and a piece of red cloth and fashioned himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he sewed the American flag on the inside of his shirt. Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike’s shirt on the wall of our cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance” (7). Mike Christian demonstrated his courage as he took the risk to sew the American Flag. As McCain illustrated through his thoughts, the American soldiers at Hanoi Hilton camp were courageous because Mike knew that if the guards found the flag sewn on his shirt, then there would be a serious consequence. Later on in the story, the Vietnamese soldiers found the homemade flag sewn inside Mike’s shirt, the soldiers took Mike for a serious beating. Hours later, Mike came back not well, after the soldiers threw him into the cell he graded a needle and started to sew another American Flag. If Mike Christian did not have the devotion to the United States of America then perhaps the courage to sew the American flag would not be presented in him. To add on, the
