Couples Interview

Couples Interview Couples are an interesting family dynamic and, in this profession, counselors will experience working with many different types of couples. Personally, I have worked with couples who are enduring relationship difficulties. The challenges that they face are many, yet I believe counseling is a great resource for couples to discuss their issues with a third party and strengthen their relationship. I decided to interview a couple I know fairly well but wanted to learn more about how they come together and how they manage different aspects of their life.

Both were not looking for a relationship but decided it would be fun to go on a blind date that a mutual friend set up. The couple notes that today, this does not seem so different because of online dating, but at the time it, was a scary and exciting experience. S explained that A’s looks captured him initially, but that their conversation and the date went so well he became really interested. A agreed and explained that S’s appearance was the first thing she noticed, but she really was attracted to how “gentlemanly” S was and how nice he treated her. Throughout dating, the couple did not find many obstacles to being together; in fact, they found their relationship was natural and easy. I could tell the couple fondly remembered the beginning of their relationship as they smiled and their eyes widened when discussing these details. Although they have been together for over 20 years, after careful thought, S stated that he would not change anything about A. However, A said the only thing she would change is S’s driving. She explains he drives as if he were a “vigilante,” speeding, weaving in and out of slower drivers, and can get easily annoyed on the …show more content…
Through this interview, I learned that common thoughts and support are two important factors a couple needs to survive. I found that this couple had a similar outlook on life, had corresponding values, and supported each other through life’s ups and downs. I can see these concepts allow for a supportive and loving relationship among the couple. I think that identifying the ideas of common life goals and values with future clients will be beneficial to working on the couple relationship in counseling. Through this interview, I also learned that life events often impact a couple’s relationship, requiring change and growth. If the couple cannot manage these events, counseling may be helpful. Overall, I was happy to interview S and A to learn more about the dynamics of the couple

Growing up, I watched many marriages and relationships fail. Unfortunately, as a child, there was not much that I could do to help. It broke my heart to see so many of the people close to me divorce and or break up. I am certain that some of the families that were torn apart chose not to seek counseling, however, I can only imagine how much it would’ve helped if they had. Even as a child I wondered if there was something that I could do to help. Today, I am able to do what I was unable to do back then. I am able to take the steps necessary to become what I’ve always dreamed of becoming. I decided to pursue my degree in Marriage and Therapy Counseling so that I can fulfill my dream to be a professional Marriage Counselor.…

Fundamentally, I believe marriage is diverse, since individuals originate from different backgrounds and cultures. Individuals, including married couples, have different values, beliefs, and attitudes towards life, such as parenting styles, rituals, traditions, and religious and spirituality affiliations, to name a few. Additionally, many couples decide not to have children. As counselors, we learn that each client is different, and the same goes for couples, as they are dissimilar from one another. However, I do believe that couples face similar struggles, such compromising and sacrificing. I assume married couples experience extreme difficulty with compromises. For example, my boyfriend and I have trouble compromising with each other on simple dilemmas. I can only imagine compromise being even harder within a marriage. Since I do not know much…

They were both casually dressed in simple t-shirts and blue jeans. From what I could tell, they seemed as though they were talking about their day. While they were talking they were engaging in eye contact but continued to eat their food. They did not talk with their hands since they were busy eating, however, they showed that they were paying attention to what the other person had to say by keeping eye contact. They are very emotional while they talk, nor are they in close proxemics of each other, nonetheless they seem as though they care deeply for each other. They are patient with each other because only one of them spoke at a time. The two of them genuinely seem to care about what their spouse had to say. More importantly, they seem like a simple couple. They are casually dressed, are not eating at a fancy restaurant, and their wedding rings are simplistic. Overall, they seem to truly love each other and enjoy each other’s…

I could also remember when he got mad at me for getting his guitar without his permission. After Alessio moved out of our house, we lost contact for years, but I still had that memory of the music I listened to when I was a child. Recently, the family reconnected and consequently we would visit each other at family reunions more often. This is where I got reconnected with the music that I heard when I was little. The music my cousin played was Norteñas(named for the Northern region of Mexico)and Rancheras on the accordion. In recent years, I have had a strong interest in the music…

The interview process went well. Even though I am familiar with this family, I still conducted the interview professionally. I started out by stating my name, that I am a Bachelor of Nursing Student and that the purpose of the interview is to learn more about the family and that everything discussed will be confidential. I began by asking Melissa questions on the structure and composition of her family, and I drew out a rough draft of a genogram as she was answering my questions and providing me with information. I asked her to tell me about three generations, including both her and Scott’s children and parents. I also asked her include ages and the dates of death for those who have passed away. Once she gave me that information,…
