1. Describe the primary issues presented in the case study. The case study of the doctor in the sleep study clinic represents issues with health disparities, race, poverty/socioeconomic class, ethnicity and culture. Activity: connection to country Read the ABC online article: utopian ideal for Indigenous health? What ‘connection to country’ strategies could you implement in? a. An inner-city drug and alcohol recovery centre- Drug and Alcohol recovery centre is an essential intervention in an inner city as, data shows the percentage of indigenous people using abused drugs and alcohol is high when comparing with other Australians. But the Geographical area, where this inner-city drug and alcohol recovery centre is situated is highly concerned in determining the strategies.…
We both understand the sense of inferiority that comes with being minorities in a predominantly white country like the United States. We have similarities despite being different races. This is a quote from Cofer’s article that I can relate to,“ I often felt humiliated when I appeared at an American friend’s birthday party wearing a dress more suitable for semi-formal”. Like Cofer I felt ashamed going to fancy malls and parties due to my average appearances with others. In fact I felt like I like I was misplaced most of times for class.…
Some of the dos and don’ts when you are working with the Hispanic or Latino culture are. Before working with the Hispanic or Latino culture, or any culture other than your own, you should do your homework and learn as much about that culture as you possibly can. As reported by Hays (2008) even though the therapist means well unless they are fluent in the clients native language they should avoid speaking the client’s language. As a professional our client’s needs always come first, so if there is a qualified therapist who speaks the client’s language we should refer the client out to them. If there is not a person to refer the client to we should seek out a qualified interpreter and should never use a family member for this job.…
The logical fallacy that I have seen in my work since I started working this month is “Either/or Reasoning”. I see this everyday at my job, they are offering one or two choices to the employee, when there are more choices to choose. I think that people need to think out of the box sometimes in life and offer more than two…
Culture Health Practice: Puerto Rico What is culture? Culture carries a different meaning for different ethnicities. Generally, culture means a set of values, standards, beliefs, art and practices shared by a particular group. Introduction Approximately sixteen percent of the United States population is made up of Hispanic (also referred to as “Latino”) individuals. The term “Hispanic” refers to an individual whose nation of origin is Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, or Spanish-speaking countries of Central America or South America (Lowdermilk, Perry, Cashion, Alden, Olchansky, 2016, p. 104). Additionally, Hispanics accounted for about 26.3% of births that took place in the United States in 2012 (Cohn, Livingston, & Passel). With over one-fourth of potential patients being Hispanic, a significant focus is placed on the expectations of nurses on Labor and Delivery units nationwide to provide culturally competent care. Cultural competence refers to the acknowledgement…
Literature Review My current practicum placement is at ReDiscover Common Ground in Grandview, Missouri. The members (clients) of ReDiscover come from many diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Each member shares at least one common ground, the fact that they all are working towards healthy living with mental illness. Due to the impact that mental health disorders have on each individual many members of ReDiscover are unable to obtain jobs or maintain healthy relationships with others.…
As a person who grew up in Mexico, and moved to the United States 6 years ago, I believe my cultural competence has allowed me to develop personal characteristics that will enable me to understand patients from any culture. I appreciate and respect the multiple dimensions of diversity, recognize and embrace perspectives that are different that mine, and have learned to implement these in my daily life. My experience volunteering at a free clinic has allowed me to interact with patients from different underserved communities, but also with other volunteers and medical students from cultures different than mine. From this experience, I have been able to demonstrate I have the attributes to be part of a diverse group. I have developed competencies…
This essay will bring an understanding of the need for cultural awareness and competency in nursing practice in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, known as Indigenous people of Australia. Different factors responsible for chronic illnesses in Indigenous population will be explained and how nurses can help in conquering the gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous population in relation to health. Emphasis will be on how ethnocentric human nature can affect health adversely. It will also discuss how sexual health is neglected in Indigenous population and how by good communication skills nurses can make Indigenous patients talk about health issues. In the end issues related to cultural competency will be discussed and how critical…
How did you relate to the readings, videos and forum discussions? I related to the readings about cultural and linguistic competence as a future health care provider. I saw how my knowledge of these topics could affect the care and well being of real people. One hypothetical that struck me was about a nurse practitioner choosing a cheaper and less effective medication for a black patient. The nurse had done this with the well-meaning intention of saving a poor person from the bills that come with a higher level of health care, not realizing that the patient was of a high socioeconomic status (Hall and Fields).…
Based on this information you can conclude that, even though both the physician and the patient are female, a female physician who is implicitly bias against black Americans will still treat the patient with racial bias regardless of the patients’ gender. The final encounter we will analyze an encounter between a physician who is a Latino American male and patient who is an African American male. Hispanic MDs have a high implicit preference for White Americans over Black Americans (Sabin 2009). In fact, only fifty-two percent of Hispanic physicians believe that patients are often are treated…
In the field of human services, having a nonjudgmental mindset is crucial to carrying out your job efficiently. In order to work with clients from all different backgrounds, it is necessary to know how to adjust your method to each individual. On my journey to becoming a human services professional, I have dealt with my own prejudices like never before. There are so many things that we say or unconsciously think on a daily basis that projects a great deal of prejudices without knowing it. The baseline and the hidden bias tests were eye-openers for me.…
I have been opened to self-awareness of where I stand culturally and know that I have not suffered like other races. One area I continue to struggle is when it comes to immigrants and crossing the border illegally. I also struggle with individual who do not speak my primary language. I understand this is a bias that I have and continue to work on through cultural competence and understanding of others. My family through past generations have not struggled like myself.…
I have focused this reflection assignment on an issue I was faced with during my third year placement in an acute hospital on a surgical ward. I felt very uneasy and awkward throughout the entire experience. I have focused on one issue that stood out the most for me and discussed this in detail. The issue was that my communication skills were ineffective due inexperience. I had not dealt with a patient experiencing a miscarriage until this placement which made me feel unprepared.…
