Counterarguments for Reality Television
In today’s society, reality television has become all the rave. It has changed everyday interactions between individuals. Reality television is one of the fastest growing television shows. These types of television shows are naturally fascinating because it gives us insight into how people speak and behave in everyday or unusual situations. Reality shows teach us things about human nature which allows us to broaden our experience. For example, a 16 year old girl gives credit to reality television for saving her life after she was in a plane crash with her grandparents who were navigating a small plane. Autumn Veatch was able to escape the burning plane but unfortunately she could not safe her grandparents. She left the wreckage and hiked alone through Washington Mountains to find help. The Biggest Loser focus on overweight contestants who compete with each other to lose the most amount of weight. This show has raised positive awareness about healthy living, nutrition, and body image (Borg). In the U.S. we are fighting obesity and we need to talk about it openly and honestly instead of denying it and shows like The Biggest Loser does a great job of doing that. Shows like Hoarders also raise positive awareness. These shows expose the struggles many people with disorganization go through and raise awareness to benefit them to get more organized. Many other reality shows are offering great opportunities to help people and this allows viewers to realize they are not alone in their challenges. In years past, certain subjects were taboo and swept under the rug but now reality television has pushed it out into the open allowing us to be more
