In the following paper, I will explore the topic of counter transference. The material that I feel is most relevant is the reading by Goldstein, “transference and counter transference”. I feel that deconstructing some of our beliefs, values, and attachment mechanisms will benefit the client so I can be able to self-scrutinize what baggage I bring to the client-therapist didactic. It also provides an interesting case that I can reflect and see myself in. This later helps transfer into the therapist- client didactic of self-reflection. This is relevant when a client brings up a particularly strong episode from the past, and it is something from my past as well. It is good to empathize but, I need to get out of my own way and can be mindful and in the moment with a client. In a relational theory, it’s important to understand my past. A client may bring up a relationship dynamic of their past early relationships in a therapeutic setting. This can be played out in a parent-child role, with me acting in a similar manner as my clients’ parent which may trigger dynamics from their own past. I feel that I may have an anxious preoccupied attachment due to the fact I am always trying to prove my knowledge and have the need to prove something in my relationships or interactions instead of letting people, clients, opinions progress naturally. Some of these feelings I have been self-aware of when in the classroom setting always wanting to raise my hand and get “acceptance” of my intelligence. I do hope we address the raw emotions of social work with identity and clinical practice. This is what excites me as a social worker, which is to do the work on myself and to be also able to help others to do the
