Dantes’s Revenge According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of revenge is “to avenge (as oneself) usually by retaliating in kind or degree, or “to inflict injury in return for.” The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is an intricate story written about obsession and revenge. Falsely accused for treason and also being a Bonapartist, Dantes was arrested on the day of his wedding. He was imprisoned on the island fortress of the Chateau d”If, where there was no hope for release. Using the aliases, the Count of Monte Cristo and Abbe Busoni, he carefully makes acquaintances with the loved ones of his enemies and the three themselves. After getting out of prison, the Dantes was ready to exact revenge. He strived for revenge and did so by meeting Albert de Morcerf, but not as Edmond Dantes, but as the Count of Monte Cristo. Albert is the son of Fernand Mondego, whose newly given title was Count de Morcerf. The Count of Monte Cristo had won Albert’s trust by saving his life after a gang, whose chief was indebted to the Count, had kidnapped him. He then was introduced to his former enemies, including Danglars, Monsieur de Villefort, and Count de Morcerf; the three men who had made him suffer and lose everything he had. To the Count’s surprise, Albert, whose mother was Mercedes, had inherited many of the good traits of his mother, instead of the ones of his father.
