Villefort had tried to bury the newborn baby while it was alive long before, but Bertuccio had dug up the baby and salvaged it. After his crime is revealed in court, Villefort was destroyed and he had gone insane. His wife, whose goal was fortune for her beloved son, had poisoned his entire family. Innocence The role of innocence in Rappaccini’s Daughter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Bartleby the Scrivener written by Herman Melville is not simply as a characteristic or state of being, rather, it is a factor that influences and concludes the tragic events that occur in both stories. While this factor does not apply to all characters from each novel, it does apply to the narrator of Bartleby the Scrivener and to Giovanni and Rappaccini respectively from Rappaccini’s Daughter. In context, innocence is defined as freedom from legal guilt of a particular crime or offense but it can also mean freedom from guilt or sin through being unacquainted with evil (Merriam-Webster).…

In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor holds a grudge on Fortunato, a frenemy who had insulted him. Instead of calling out Fortunato for saying some hurtful things to him, Montresor starts to plot his revenge, which entails murder. This requires some deep scheming, such as where to do the killing, how to get him to comply, how to keep it a secret, and how to actually carry out the murder. Revenge is the act of getting back at someone who has previously caused an inconvenience to one. Whether the revenge taken is abstract or concrete, it can cause huge problems for both the one receiving and the one bestowing. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, the idea of revenge is seen in an abstract form due to the main character Jay Gatsby getting back at the world. Along with abstract there is also concrete revenge which is seen in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, because of the wife’s desire to prove her husband wrong and the girl on the wallpaper eventually succeeding in driving the wife crazy. One of William Shakespeare’s greatest works, Hamlet, utilizes the idea of concrete revenge by applying great concrete consequences to its main characters.…
