Q: Edmond Dantes takes on a number of of aliases during the course of the novel and many other characters have a variety of names as well. What do you consider to be the significance of names in the Count of Monte Cristo? Can you speculate on the meaning of each of Edmond Dantes assumed names?
A: Names play a key role in the Count of Monte Cristo. Throughout the novel, several characters assume many different aliases. Each alias has a deeper meaning, reflects the character’s personality or shows the readers a moral of the story. Aside from Edmond Dantes’ multiple aliases, Monsieur de Villefort, Fernand Mondego, Mercedes Herrera, and Benedetto all undergo name changes. Monsieur de Villefort changes his name because of his bonapartist father

Benedetto changes his name to Andrea Cavalcanti ruins his father’s reputation by accusing Villefort of burying him alive when he was a newborn. After helping Edmond take Villefort down, he stays and helps the Count of Monte Cristo with other revenge plots. Edmond Dantes’ aliases have the deepest meanings of all. The first alias he created was an Italian priest named Abbe Busoni. He used this alias to gain the trust of people so that later on, a different alias of his would manipalite or avenge them. Ex: Caderousse. The second alias introduced is Lord Wilmore, an extremely generous english nobleman. Ex: Monsieur Morrel. The third alias introduced is Sinbad the Sailor. Edmond Dantes as Lord Wilmore hints to Monsieur Morell’s daughter Julie, they they should accept a gift that will be given to them signed ‘Sinbad the sailor.’ This alias, like Lord Wilmore was one of Dante's more giving personas. The last identity introduced is the Count of Monte Cristo. This is the alias Edmond assumed for majority of the book. He used this alias to avenge the man he used to be and ruin the lives who ruined his. Ex: Danglars..Villefort...etc. Towards the end, he looks back at his life and starts to regret the decisions and playing god with this
