Counseling: My Most Rewarding Career Field

The first question that I asked when I met this amazing woman was,“what do you think someone who is entering this career field should know before they decided to actually do this?” She told me that it is probably one of the most rewarding career fields there is. Being able to watch those that were once so afraid to be happy become those that are the happiest people around is really amazing! If one is unsure if they want to become an LPC there are many things that one should consider before going through with the schooling. According to Kimberley Grosz it takes people skills and being firm with ones boundaries (Grosz). It is understandable that ones needs to have serious people skills because that is who you are helping in this profession. Another big one that I found interesting that Kimberley Grosz said in our interview, was that someone who might be thinking of going into this field needs to really take care of themselves before they can take care of others. She talked about an incident that she had heard of where a fellow counselor had just gone through some traumatic things in his life and never thought that it would surface while helping someone but it did (Grosz). The schooling required are a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling from an accredited institution. Also with having a master’s or doctoral degree you also have to obtain 3,000 hours of clinical supervised experience (American Counseling Association, 2). I have been planning on maybe becoming a counselor and I want to finish my schooling at Idaho State University and then go on from there. I want to work with young children who are going through hard things in their life and I want to help them to get back to who they once were. I learned many things from my interview and probably taking care of ourselves before helping others is a very big one. I believe that that goes for all jobs especially ones that help others. Counselors are not just people that sit there and listen to you, they are people that help you get from a dark place to a better one. I was once told in a psychology class that I was taking that everyone needs to see a counselor or someone that has an unbiased opinion, and I believe that that is so
