It is part of becoming culturally competent as a counselor. Being Latino myself, I can honestly say that family is something we value greatly. We tend to rely on each other for support and strength. So, I have to take that into consideration when working with Catherine. Her career decision can be highly influenced by her immediate family. Catherine might even would to bring in her family into a counseling session, however, I would have to address that in the first session. working with Latino families especially immigrants is going to be my strength as a counselor. It will be easy to relate to them because of my own culture. At times, however, these same assumptions can create tension in my therapeutic relationships because some people do not fit my perception of issues in immigrant families. Instead I need to come with a clean slate and let the family fill me in before making any assumptions about them. While the need to prove myself could be a hard pattern of behavior to break, I believe in my ability to observe these thoughts in my interactions.…

Between moving, the death of her parents, going to a new school, learning English, and the pregnancy, she has a lot on her plate and is going to need some help. With this in mind, I agree that the Collaborative-Independent model would be best because it allows every member to have an equal voice and work together.
