Class Observation Report

Class Observation The observation and interview I conducted was for a class at Santa Ana College (SAC) titled “Counseling 116: Career/Life Planning and Personal Exploration”. This class meets twice a week for an hour and 45 minutes. The day that I observed, the professor was focusing on helping the students write their career research papers by engaging in a discussion about skills. He described to students that skills were specific attributes, personal qualities and talents that people bring to their job. There are two types of skills, which were described as hard skills and soft skills. Students were told that hard skills included the training necessary to obtain the job that they want. Soft skills were related as things that students learn …show more content…
The professor does a great job of outlining on the second page of the syllabus all of the assignments and how much they are worth. For this reason, he meets prompt number one. Prompt number two states, “Does the syllabus provide student with the information and resources to achieve course goals and expectations, and to do so at a high level?” (CUE, 2014) While the professor does describe what the course requirements are and his policy for late work, there is no mention of resources on campus to help students who may be struggling academically or just need access to a computer. Therefore, He is partially meeting this prompt. The third prompt ask, “Does the syllabus utilize language [that] conveys a willingness to help students succeed?” (CUE, 2014) I would have to say that while the professor does mention opportunities for extra credit, his tone seems threatening because of his use of writing in all capitals. For instance, he states, “I WILL DEDUCT 7 POINTS FOR EVERY CLASS MISSED” and “NO LATE HOMEWORK and no E-MAILING homework to instructor” (CITE). I feel that the syllabus can be intimidating to students because of the use of this type of language. What is more, I feel that students can become confused, because at one point he states no late homework and then he includes another part that states late work may be accepted at his discretion. For this reason, I think he misses the third

Late work should never be turned on the same day that it’s due. If an assignment is turned in late, then it will not be excepted. However, there will be special cases where the professor allows for late work to be turned in, consequently, the grade will be reduced by ten percent for each day that it’s missing.…

In her essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, and Other Tales of Woe” Carolynn Segal expresses her intolerance of students turning in their assignments late with ridiculous excuses. Everyone more than likely has experienced life throwing something unexpected in his or her direction and not having time to complete that last minute homework that is due tomorrow. If I were a college professor, I would try my best to stay to strict deadlines, yet I would be understanding under certain circumstances. I would be willing to extend deadlines if I knew they were hardworking students or had a reasonable excuse with proof. I would not allow excuses from students whose procrastinating behavior has been a reoccurring issue.…

As honors students, we thrive on achievements. Tangible achievements are what, for many of us, ensure that we have accomplished our goals. For this reason, when I learned about the “Honor Cadet of the Flight” award at Civil Air Patrol Encampment, I was determined to achieve it. I tried extremely hard and made sure that everything I did displayed nothing less than excellence throughout the week. Because I was so determined to achieve that award, the setback came across disconcerted me greatly.…

Within the city of Corpus Christi, there is evidence of economic disparity. I discovered this through my experience with the Junior Achievement (JA) program, and through data collected and observations made on my assigned school and its neighborhood, and of other JA schools in the city of Corpus Christi. All data and observations were collected to show comparisons between each JA school. The information found is valuable because it is important to know about both the physical side of a community and the economic side of a community, and how they compare to each other, as well as how they compare to other communities within a city. Junior Achievement is an organization dedicated to educating young children about branches that deal with economics,…

After doing their daily routine, the teacher starts the day with some calendar lessons. Student EA’s were asked to prepare the centers or activity. Each center has different types of activity.…

I chose to attend a community college for three main reasons: affordability, location, and small classes. Right out of high school I started college at a public, four-year college, University of River Falls; I had to drop out a month in due to medical issues. At that time I was unaware that I could make a medical appeal and get a full refund, so when I tried college again I was over a thousand dollars in debt from my first attempt. I’m on disability, so my income is limited and I can’t work that many hours. The location of my current community college, St. Cloud Technical and Community College, is right by most of my doctors, so the location is a great fit for me.…

This chapter talks about students and homework. A student has a busy life in school and for a student to grow, they must get a sufficient amount of sleep every night. A teacher cannot expect a student to do over an hour of homework every night. Rafe believes that “students should be told that homework is giving them an opportunity to be responsible and independent” on page 103. This chapter teaches me that homework is a good thing, but not to assign too much.…

Inside an early start Pre-k class beforehand the teacher and her assistant gave me a bit of information about the students to retain when I had to work with them one-on-one. Furthermore in the process of them informing me of their behaviors, what to expect, what not to expect, and reasons why some have some sorts of trouble do to their families background. She emphasized more so on the boys in the class rather than the girls.
