The unspoken corollary is that our society must embody some form of slavery… Where the natives free of Spanish rule, they are incapable of taking care of themselves and dammed for disloyalty and ignorance towards our Lord Jesus Christ. It can thus only be called cruel to set free such destitution and suffering on the natives. While it has been suggested that the policies of the encomienda system are detrimental to native societies, stealing, raping, killing and general mayhem- all sins in our Christian faith- will engulf New Spain. Therefore abolishing the encomienda system would not just lead to severe bloodshed, but it would also be absurdly impractical and utopian. Rather than turning to abolition, feeding, clothing, housing, and occasionally even entertaining the natives will encourage them to focus on a better life, while maintaining the presence of the Spanish Empire in the
