COUN5214- Theories of Personalities

Chris Gardner puts all of his savings into bone-density scanners, it was twice as expensive as an x-ray machine but with a slightly clearer image. This dream breaks the family, bringing troubles to his relationship with his wife Linda, who leaves him and moves to New York where she has taken a job in a pizza parlor. Their son Christopher stays with Chris because he and his wife both know that he will be able to take better care of him. I chose the social cognitive theory because I see a lot of aspects of his environment and his role as a parent changing. One of the main criticisms of social cognitive theory is that it is not a unified theory. This means that the different aspects of the theory do not tie together to create a cohesive explanation of behavior. Social cognitive theory tends to ignore maturation and developmental stages throughout the lifetime. It does not explain how motivation or personality changes over time. Chris’s motivation changed because his wife left him and not longer believed that he could be an adequate provider anymore. He not longer had the support he needed to pursue his …show more content…
We use our feelings as your cue to reflect on our thinking. I think that at the time Chris was experiencing a lot of different feelings including anger, anxiety, disappointment, resentment, depression and hopelessness. All of these feelings lead to the change that his family needed at the time.
I think that the character was influenced at an early age to grow up and be somebody whether his father was present or not. I think the attitude in the single parent home was to teach him how to survive on his own and it also seems like he did not have any educational background probably because he had to be the man in the family and help his mother take care of the home. Over all he has many intellectual abilities that just needed to be developed and discovered. Society pushes young African American men to either The character seemed pretty strong even after losing everything he had. He developed perseverance and determination to change and do things differently. I admire his courage and his courageousness. The loss only made him want to gain so much
