Despite the fact that I need to work on adding transitions, including enhanced details, and improving on word choice; I excelled in writing a concise introduction, including a conclusion that did not add anything new to the mix, and following MLA format. After receiving feedback on my first paper, I now know what my strengths, weaknesses, and goals are.

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When I started my first quarter at Midwestern University, I felt most ambivalent about writing papers. The only writing I had done since I graduated from the University of Arizona consisted of progress notes, risk assessments, and individualized service plans. I thought I had a sufficient knowledge APA format, but I had not written a formal APA paper in at least three years. Needless to say, I was thrilled to see I would be taking a course entitled Fundamentals of Graduate Writing. After the first day of class, I realized whatever knowledge I thought I had regarding APA style was either incorrect or insufficient.…
