With the increasing amounts of financial cuts public schools are being faced with, finding ways to fund schools is becoming more and more difficult. Many schools in the United States have turned to school-run athletics to help with their monetary issues. However, by increasing the cost of athletics, children of low-income families are being isolated from participating.
In a study performed by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, it was found that 61% of children participating in both middle school and high school sports were required to pay a fee in order to play in their respective leagues. Furthermore, 21% were required to pay over $150 to participate. Not to mention the amount spent on the necessary equipment needed
